Scott is right as normal.Fence is the biggest problem I have found. I find the digital readout to be EXTREMELY handy for incremental setup moves also. Done in one pass, no burning, chatter or anything, just smooth…. The face cut was 2.5 tall and as deep as. I have also outfitted it with a power feed (woodtek 1 hp) that will do an amazing job climb cutting. The attached picture is of some mouldings I did for a piece I made out of tiger maple.

I have outfitted mine very reasonably by buying cutters literally by the skid full from places like IRS auctions over the years for pennies on the dollar. I have looked at many shaper fences and the Powermatic's is as good as you can buy, yes there are people out there who try to tear everything down and find fault, but it is simply the best you can buy. I have a 9" diameter panel raising cutter (3wings) that will remove a full 3" face cut as deep as I dare go with it, effortlessly. The Delta struggled while nothing slows down the Powermatic. Hands down, the Powermatic is far superior. I have had 2 shapers, a 3HP Delta and a PM2700 5HP. Yes, most tooling for shapers are larger profiles, but thats one of the things I really like about them, not many people cut large profiles anymore. Just do the math on the diameter vs spindle speed and you'll see the tip speed far surpasses a router. Sure, you can't plunge cut etc, but for quality of cut, a router can't even come close. I disagree about doing router type work on a shaper.

I have several Jet tools in my shop and am very very happy with them, their customer service IMHO is second to none just great folks! Feel free to PM if you have any questions or if you want to come this way to check out my machine Again because shapers are production machines, cutters are made for that production type of work. I have a cabinet shop so I do use it.īe very aware that shaper cutters are way more money than router bits. I do not own a feeder due to cost, being vigilant and making your setups as safe as possible is the way I do it. It is safer however most decent feeders will cost as much as the shaper you put it on. 5hp is a serious PRODUCTION machine! Unless that is where you are headed I think it may be more than you need.Ī power feed is wonderful again for PRODUCTION. That said I use a 2hp Jet and it does everything I need it to do.

Firstly, It seems you have given a lot of thought to this Do you do ALOT of heavy work, IE raised panels, 5 pc doors, rail and stile joinery, T&G, etc? A shaper is a wonderful tool, HOWVER it does NOT do router type work as well as a router.
